Tension broke out in and around Panur last night, after the death of a local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker was attacked by a group of assailants.

The BJP worker K. Rajesh, 28, was critically injured in the attack at Thazhekunnothuparamba under the Kolavallur Police Station limits. Having suffered multiple stab injuries, he died in the early hours of Tuesday at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

According to the police, Rajesh was sitting in a jeep at Thazhekunnothuparamba at around 8-30 p.m. when he came under assault by the assailants. Though he managed to flee from the spot after he was stabbed by the gang, he collapsed before a local co-operative hospital. Police personnel, who reached the spot later, immediately rushed him to the Indira Gandhi Co-operative Hospital at Thalassery. The police said that the victim suffered stab injuries in his head, legs and shoulder. After preliminary treatment at the hospital at Thalassery, he was taken to the medical college hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The BJP alleged that the attacked was carried out by CPI (M) workers. The BJP also observed a 12-hour hartal at the Koothuparamba Assembly constituency in protest against the killing of the party worker. No untoward incident was reported from the area, however, large posse of police personnel were posted in the area in view of the tension, the police said.
