BJP alleges inadequate security for Sushma Swaraj

April 02, 2011 08:50 pm | Updated 08:50 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Bharatiya Janata Party has charged the State government with having failed to provide adequate security to Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj.

Party State spokesperson George Kurien said here on Saturday that Ms. Swaraj was given an escort in all other States as she belonged to the Y Plus category. But when she came to Thiruvananthapuram on Friday to campaign for O. Rajagopal and P.K. Krishnadas, she was provided with only a gunman. The failure to provide adequate security to a national leader like her even after the detection of something that was suspected to be a bomb on Friday morning was deplorable. Nothing was done even though the Director-General of Police was directly apprised of the situation.

Mr. Kurien warned that making security arrangements for national leaders on the basis of their politics was against national interests.
