Balanced approach needed: Kunhalikutty

March 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - MALAPPURAM:

Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty has underscored the necessity of having a balanced approach to the environment with regard to protecting it and making use of it.

Addressing the media here on Monday, Mr. Kunhalikutty said that gone were the times when people exploited natural resources without giving any thought for the environment.

“The government is now trying for a balanced approach when it comes to collecting or mining natural resources for human needs,” he said. The Minister said the impasse facing the construction industry would not last long. “We need natural resources such as sand and granite. But we need to protect the environment as well. This is where we need to have a balanced approach. The government is trying for it,” Mr. Kunhalikutty said.

Mr. Kunhalikutty said that depleting groundwater level was an indication of the damage uncontrolled mining and quarrying activities had inflicted on the land.
