B.A. Rajakrishnan, managing editor of the political weekly Keralasabdam, passed away here on Tuesday evening. He was 70.

He was also an industrialist and a film producer who was very active in the social and cultural arenas of Kollam.

Dr. Rajakrishnan, who did his MBBS from the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College in 1965, began his career with the Health Services Department. It was after he married the daughter of R. Krishnaswamy, the founder editor of Kerala Shabdam, that he took to the path of journalism. The films he produced include Radha enna Pennkutty,Baloon,Thalam Manasinte Thalam , Nattuchakkiruttu , and Lady Teacher . He had instituted the R. Krishnaswamy Memorial Journalism Award in association with the Kollam Press Club.

He had also served as president of the organisation People’s Initiative and the Railway Users Association. He is survived by his wife Vimala, who is the editor of the film magazine Nana and the women’s magazine Kumkumam , son Madhu R. Balakrishnan, the executive editor of Keralasabdam, and two daughters. The funeral rites will be performed at the Mulamkadakam public cemetery at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala condoled the death Dr. Rajakrishnan.
