Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Tuesday that avian influenza was under control in the State.

In an official release issued after discussions with a Central team of specialists, the Chief Minister said the disease had not spread to new areas.

No infection in humans had been reported. The chances for that were low according to the Central team.

People would not get the disease by bathing in waterbodies from where death of birds had been reported.

The team had recommended that those handling birds should wash their hands and feet with soap.

The team was satisfied with the preventive and control measures taken.

The Chief Minister called upon the public to cooperate with efforts to decontaminate areas affected by flu.

Minister for Health V.S. Sivakumar, who also participated in the discussions here, said further steps would be taken on the advice of the Central team.
