Attack on CM: 5 more LDF men arrested

The Town police arrested five more Left Democratic Front (LDF) workers on Tuesday in connection with the attack on Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Sunday.

The arrested included Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) district secretary Hameed Irinav. The others were Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers N.K. Ravi (62), K. Purushothaman (58), K. Preman (57), and M.V. Ligesh (35). They were arrested from different parts of Kannur district. The police said a few other LDF workers were being questioned.

NCP leaders said here that Hameed was arrested from a private hospital here where his mother had been admitted.

Police sources said more arrests would be made in the coming days as the protestors involved in the attack were being identified. The police on Monday had arrested 18 LDF workers, most of them CPI(M) activists. Legislators K.K. Narayanan and C. Krishnan were among the accused in the case registered by the police. The arrested were charged with attempt to murder and destruction of public property.
