The police team investigating the attack on Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on October 27 questioned Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLAs C. Krishnan and K.K. Narayanan on Monday.
Mr. Krishnan and Mr. Narayanan, who had been issued notice by the police to appear before Taliparamba Deputy Superintendent of Police K.S. Sudarshan for questioning and recording their statement, reached the office of the Special Investigation Team at 10 a.m.
Their submission was recorded after the questioning, which lasted two hours. Mr. Krishnan and Mr. Narayanan, representing the Payyannur and Taliparamba Assembly constituencies respectively, are the first and second accused in the case.
The special investigation investigation team was constituted after Mr. Chandy was injured when suspected Left Democratic Front (LDF) workers assembled near the Police Club here to wave black flags at Mr. Chandy when he arrived to inaugurate the closing ceremony of the State police athletic meet hurled stones at the motorcade.
“The investigation in the case has been completed and the charge sheet will be filed in a week,” Mr. Sudarshan told The Hindu . He said the MLAs were among 114 accused who had been identified. The MLAs would be charged with the offence of unlawful assembly, he said.
The police had arrested 100 of the 114 LDF workers who had been identified. The investigating team had examined video clippings to identify the culprits who had hurled stones at the vehicle of the Chief Minister. The police said the two MLAs were found to be present among the protesters who had hurled stones at the Chief Minister's car.
Police sources said the MLAs co-operated with the investigating team. Mr. Krishnan and Mr. Narayanan had been earlier served notice to appear before the Dy.SP on April 27.
In their response then, the MLAs said the notice was part of the State government's attempt to disparage them and their party with a political motive.
However, the two MLAs had assured the team that they would appear before the officer on another day if the team wanted their presence before him.
They had then been served a second notice on May 9 directing them to appear before the officer at 10 a.m. on Monday.
