Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLAs K.K. Narayanan and C. Krishnan have been issued notice to appear before the investigating officer to record their statement in the case relating to the attack on Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on October 27.
The notice was issued by Taliparamba Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) K.S. Sudarshan, who is heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
The Chief Minister had suffered bruises on his forehead and chest when stones were hurled at his official vehicle allegedly by Left Democratic Front (LDF) workers while he was on his way to attend the valedictory function of the State police athletic meet.
The police said the MLAs were asked to appear before the Dy. SP at his office at Taliparamba at 5 p.m on April 28.
They were reportedly present when the LDF workers had gathered near the Police Club to protest against the Chief Minister.
When contacted, Mr. Krishnan, who represents the Payyannur Assembly constituency, said both he and Mr. Narayanan had received the notice and would respond to it on the basis of legal advice being sought. The notice does not mention any charge against them, he added.
Mr. Narayanan represents the Dharmadam Assembly constituency.
According to the police sources, the 18-member SIT had arrested nearly 100 people in connection with the incident.
All of them were released on bail.
The arrested were charged with murder attempt, criminal conspiracy and destruction of p ublic property. The charge sheet is expected to be filed in a couple of days, they said.
CPI(M) district secretary P. Jayarajan said in a statement that the notice served by the police on the MLAs was unprecedented.
Stating that the party would legally challenge the case of the alleged attack on the Chief Minister, he said the LDF workers had assembled there to wave black flags against Mr. Chandy.
However, the police had slapped charges of attempted murder against many LDF workers in connection with the case, he added.
