The Crime Branch on Sunday interrogated assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Jayanandan, an officer attached to the Varapuzha police station, in connection with the alleged custodial death of S.R. Sreejith.

Official sources said Jayanandan had been in charge of the Varapuzha station on the day when Sreejith was taken into custody. He took charge of the station in the absence of sub-inspector G.S. Deepak, who had been away on leave. Deepak, who was remanded in judicial custody by the Judicial First Class Magistrate court, is currently lodged in the Kakkananad district jail.

The probe team had earlier found irregularities in the arrest proceedings. They sought clarifications on the health condition of Sreejith when he was brought to the station, in addition to the scenes that unfolded following the arrival of Deepak later.

Besides the ASI, the Crime Branch also collected statements from M.K. Murali, circle inspector of Vadakkekara police station.

Identification parade

Meanwhile, the sleuths are slated to approach the court seeking to conduct the identification parade of the three Rural Tiger Force members arrested in connection with the case. Official sources said the medical board constituted to examine the post-mortem examination report of Sreejith was expected to submit its final report on Monday.
