Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has come out against the police filing cases against students who published articles in college magazines portraying Prime Minister Narendra Modi in poor light.

The government will not countenance police action against the students belonging to the Student Federation of India, the Minister told the Assembly on Tuesday. “It goes against freedom of expression.”

Mr. Chennithala noted that lampooning of politicians was something common in a democracy and police action was not warranted. The Inspector General of Police, Thrissur, had been asked to inquire into the matter, including seizure of college magazines and registration of cases against students.
