Archbishop passes away

Dr. Daniel Acharuparampil, 70, Archbishop of Varappuzha and President of Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) passed away here at the Lourdes Mission Hospital on Monday at 11.10 a. m.

He was admitted to the hospital three days ago with high fever, having suffered multiple organ failure. A spokesman for the Latin Archdiocese said that body of the Archbishop would be embalmed and brought to the St. Francis Assisi Cathedral at 9.30 a. m. on Tuesday where it will be placed for the public to pay their homage.

The body will be taken to the St. Albert's School grounds on Wednesday morning. The funerl ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 3.30 p. m., the spokesman added.

The Late Dr. Acharuparampil belonged to the Catholic religious order of Carmerlies Discalced and took over the reins of the Varappuzha Archdiocese in November 1996.

Born into a traditional Catholic family in 1939 at Pallippuram, near here, he entered the seminary in 1956. He was ordained a priest in March 1966 and went on to complete his studies in Philosophy and to compete a Master's Degree from Benares Hindu University.

He was known as a scholar who delved deep into Hindu spirituality and wrote several books on the subject, including "Hindu Mysticism and Spirituality" and The Destiny of Man in the Evolutionary Thought of Sree Aurobindo."
