A committee has been formed ‘to mobilise people's support for a movement to root out corruption in Kozhikode Corporation.'

Gandhi Peace Foundation president P.V. Rajagopal will announce the formal launch of the committee at a function at the Press Club auditorium here on Wednesday.

Committee convener K.P. Vijayakumar said here on Tuesday that Kozhikode, once a ‘city of truth,' was now a hotbed of corruption. Corruption had been rampant when the last Corporation Council was managing the affairs of the city, he said.

The committee had sought a social audit of the Corporation's accounts during 2005-10, and an inquiry by an Assembly committee into the utilisation of Asian Development bank funds in the city.

The Corporation's town planning, revenue, health, and engineering departments should be overhauled and officer of the Indian Administrative Service posted as Corporation Secretary, he said.

Multi-storey residential complexes should be constructed only after obtaining approval from people's committees, he said.
