One more newborn child of a tribal couple from Attappady tribal belt died at the Medical College Hospital at Thrissur on Friday, officials said.

With the death of the one-day old child, the number of infants who lost their lives due to malnutrition in Attappady in recent months has gone up to 32.

Malnutrition and being underweight was stated to be the reason for the infant’s death, official sources said.

Taking a serious view of the situation, the State government had recently announced a special health package for the tribal region.

Union Minister Jairam Ramesh had visited the area last month along with the State Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to study the situation.
