The annual agriculture fair, Omalloor Vayal Vanibhom, began at Omalloor near here on Wednesday.
The week-long farm fair is being organised by the Omalloor grama panchayat at the panchayat grounds.
District Collector, P. Venugopal, inaugurated the annual fair by lighting a lamp at a function held in the forenoon. Mr P.R. Kuttappan Nair, grama panchayat president, presided over the inaugural function.
According to the organisers, agriculture and animal husbandry seminars and quiz, organised by Agriculture department, will also be held as part of the annual fair.
Omalloor Vayal Vanibhom was a major annual attraction to the peasant community in Central Travancore in older days.
People from the bordering districts of Tamil Nadu and from the neighouring districts of Kollam, Kottayam, Idukki, and even from Thiruvananthapuram used to visit Omalloor for purchasing farm produces and cattle brought to the fair. Farmers used to exchange their farm produce and cattle at the fair through barter system prevailed in those days.
Reviving the once-vibrant rural market system, the local grama panchayat has been organising exhibition-cum-sale of farm produces, cattle show and cultural programmes at Omalloor since the past 15 years.
An agriculture seminar was held in the forenoon. The District Police Dog Squad will present a dog show on Thursday afternoon.
The cultural procession to be held as part of the fair will be inaugurated by the local MLA, K. Sivadasan Nair, on Friday afternoon.
The District Panchayat president, Babu George, will deliver the keynote address.
