Anganwadi workers blocking the Kozhikode-Mysuru National Highway-212 near the SKMJ school at Kalpetta in Wayanad district on Thursday.

Traffic on the busy Kozhikode- Mysuru National Highway -212was disrupted for over an hour on Thursday noon after hundreds of Anganwadi workers in the district  under the aegis of the Anganwadi workers and Helpers Association, affiliated to the CITU, blocked the road near the SKMJ school here.

The workers had launched an indefinite fast in front of the collectorate here for the past 25 days in protest against the alleged negligence of governments to them and denial of their rights.

Though the representatives of the protesters held a discussion with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, he did not respond positively to their demands, C.K. Saseendran, district secretary CPI(M) said.

The protesters took out a march to a venue where Mr. Chandy was attending a programme but the police blocked the march near the SKMJ high school here. Later they staged a blockade on the NH in protest against the alleged negative stance of the Chief Minster on the issue. Traffic was disrupted for nearly one-and-a-half hours on the NH.

The protesters raised demands seeking a minimum salary of Rs. 15,000 a month, considering them as government employees and ensuring job security and other benefits.

The agitation would be intensified in the coming days, Mr. Saseendran said.
