It was a 350-year-old folk tale from Bangladesh that regaled a packed crowd at Tagore Theatre in the capital on the third day of the Bharat Rang Mahotsav International Theatre Festival, organised by the National Drama School and the Public Relations Department.
Amina Sundari directed by Rokeya Rafique Baby told the story of Amina Sundari, a girl from Chittagong and her wait for her husband Nasar, a sailor who had gone to Burma.
Though he gets married there, he comes back after several years in an impoverished state. But, more than her true love and the sacrifice of waiting for so long, there is something else that bothers him.
The story of Amina becomes representative of several other Aminas in Bangladesh, according to the director. The play was written by S.M. Solaiman, one of the leading lights of the new theatre movement in Bangladesh.
Theatre Art Unit, founded by Mr. Solaiman in 1992, performed the play.
