Thrissur Pooram, a major festival of the State, will be celebrated on Sunday.
The festivities will begin in the morning with the city playing host to processions ('Cheru Poorams') from Kanimangalam Sastha, Karamukku Bhagavathy, Neythilakkaavu Bhagavathy, Lalur Bhagavathy, Panamukkampalli Sastha, Choorakkottukavu Durga, Ayyanthole Karthyayani, and Chembukkavu Karthyayani temples.
The 'Madathilekku Varavu' ceremony, in which the 'thidambu' (idol) of the Thiruvambadi Bhagavathy is taken from the Thiruvambadi temple to Naduvil Madom at Pazhayanadakkavu, west of the Thekkinkad Maidan, will begin at around 7.30 a.m.
Pachavadyam, led by percussion expert Annamanada Parameswara Marar, will begin later.
The 'Madathil Varavu' ceremony will follow. After the procession bearing the idol (thidambu) of the Thiruvambady Bhagavathy reaches the 'Sreemoola Sthanam' of the Vadakkunatha temple, Pandimelam, led by Kizhakoottu Aniyan Marar, will replace Panchavadyam.
The procession of the Paramekkavu temple will begin at 12.30 p.m. Ilanjithara Melam, led by veteran percussionist Peruvanam Kuttan Marar, will be staged inside the Vadakkunatha temple at 2 p.m.
Following the two-hour ensemble, the procession of the Paramekkavu contingent will move through the southern entrance of the Sree Vadakkunatha temple towards a statue in front of the Thrissur Corporation office.
The procession of the Thiruvambadi contingent will enter Vadakkunatha temple through its western entrance and will make its exit through its southern entrance.
‘Kudamattom’
‘Kudamattom' (display of decorative umbrellas), the most colourful event of Pooram, will begin at 5.30 p.m.
The events of the day are repeated at night. Display of fireworks will be held in the wee hours of April 22. Thiruvambadi exhibited its elephant accoutrements (Çhamayam) at the Sri Sankara Hall on M.G. Road on Saturday.
