The Paper one examination of the CBSE’s All India Engineering Entrance Examination-which was rescheduled on Sunday morning following a question paper leak in north India-recommenced at 12 noon in 18 centres in Thiruvananthapuram.

More than 10,000 students would write paper one from 12 noon to 3 p.m. The architecture entrance examination will now be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A CBSE official told The Hindu that there are only two centres in THiruvananthapuram where the architecture examination is scheduled.

Paper one was originally scheduled from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

For thousands of students who sat down to write the paper one examination on Sunday morning, the announcement that the question papers were being taken back came as a bolt from the blue. In some schools an urgent announcement was made over the public address system to all invigilators to stop distributing the question papers. Bewildered parents anxiously waiting outside the examination centres learnt moments later-mainly from their wards who streamed out of the examination halls—that there had been a question paper leak in north india and that the examination was being postponed.

“We let the children inside by 9 a.m. and the distribution of question papers began at 9.20 a.m.,” Jyothis Chandran the chairman of the Jyothis Central School Menamkulam told The Hindu, “by about 9.32 a.m. we received the urgent communiqué that the question papers had to be taken back. We took them back and I immediately called the parents and briefed them on whatever we knew. We have 500 children writing the examinations here and more than 1,000 parents are present. Even as I speak to you the alternative set of question papers have reached the school from the bank where they were kept for safe custody.” By 11.30 a.m. the students were let back inside the examination halls once again, he said and added that the school had arranged for breakfast and lunch for the students and the parents.

The postponement of the examinations was greeted with anger by many parents, particularly those who had come from outside Thiruvananthapuram. P. K. Jayaprakash a Pathanamthitta-based businessman told THE Hindu that he had set out from home at 4 a.m. this morning so that they could reach Saraswathy Vidyalaya at Vattiyoorkkavu where his daughter is writing the engineering entrance examination.

“Soon after the students went inside the halls the principal announced over the mike that the invigilators should not distribute the question papers. Later came the announcement that the examination was being postponed because of the leak. Just imagine the plight of the children. Most of them must have eaten a light breakfast because of the examination. Now, they have to sit in the hall till 3 p.m. and then again from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. if they are writing the architecture examination. The school doesn’t appear to have any facility for the children to have food. What if there is no electricity in a school? How will the children write the evening examination?”

According Mr. Chandran the CBSE informed his school that for students wishing to appear for the AFMC examination scheduled on Sunday afternoon, a re-test for the engineering paper would be held on May 8. “There were five students in our school who had registered for the AFMC test. Two candidates has already left to write that examination. Three others decided to write the AFMC test and writing the rescheduled engineering test,” he added.

The leakage of All India Engineering Entrance Examination question papers put thousands of students and their parents in dilemma in the district on Sunday. The first part of the examinations was to begin at 9.30 a.m., but following the leakage of question papers, the examination was delayed for more than two hours in all the 10 sub centres in Kozhikode.

The students who entered the examination hall were in a situation to come out after clearing the preliminary signing procedures. Some of them had even received the question papers. Later, following official intimations that the examination would begin at 12 noon, they were re-admitted to the examination hall by 11.30. By the time, the new set of question papers had been brought to the respective centres.

As uncertainty prevailed on resuming of the examination at 12 noon, some of the students reportedly gave up their attempt and went home. But, majority thronged to the examination centres coping up with the situation.

The parents who came along with their children from neighboring districts had a tough time in the unexpected development. Several of them had hired rooms for their children in the city. Though the examiners gave assurance on the timely resuming of examinations at 12 noon, the parents, especially those from distant locations were found apprehensive on the rearranged evening schedule from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. As it was May Day and Sunday, majority of the hotels were also not functioning in the city.

“We had arrived in Kozhikode around 7.30 a.m. The unexpected rescheduling really troubled us,” said K.C. Padmanabhan, a parent from Kannur district. He said several parents and children who came from Wayanad and Kasaragod districts too had a trouble time.

Meantime, P. Radhakrishnan, a parent from Palakkad district shared that the timely information given by the examiners wiped out the tension of several parents. “They had informed us that the examination would resume sharply at 12 noon by admitting students to the hall at 11.30,” he said
