Rebutting CPI State secretary Kanam Rajendran's strictures about the LDF government over its alleged lapses, CPI(M) State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that partners in the ruling front should not allow their differences over administrative matters to serve as a weapon in the hands of the ‘enemy class.’

‘‘The situation today warrants greater unity in the LDF, especially between the CPI(M) and the CPI,’’ Mr. Balakrishnan said adding that while differences over political disputes could be aired publicly for ensuring more clarity on the issues concerned, voicing differences over administrative matters by the partners in the ruling front would stain the image of the government.

In an oblique reference to Mr. Rajendran's reproach to the LDF government, the CPI(M) leader said that such expressions of differences created an impression that the LDF was crumbling.

"The CPI, being more experienced in administrative field as it had been with the LDF and the United Democratic Front, should bring administrative issues, if any, for discussion within the LDF," Mr. Balakrishnan said.

Rebuttal of criticism

In his rebuttal of the CPI State secretary's censure of the LDF government over the police action against Jishnu Pranoy's mother, 'misuse' of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, killing of Maoists in police firing at Nilambur, Munnar issue and bid to exempt Cabinet decisions from the Right to Information Act, the CPI(M) leader said that differences on such issues could have been sorted out through bilateral talks between the CPI(M) and the CPI.

The CPI(M) leader stated that the issue raised by Jishnu's mother Mahija could have been addressed without the agitation she had launched.

The office of the Director General of Police and surrounding areas had been declared high security area in 2002.

Description of the killing of Maoists from outside the State in police firing at Nilambur as a case of fake encounter was far from true. They had not been shot dead while they were launching an agitation, he said.

On the issue of UAPA, Mr. Balakrishnan said the CPI(M)'s stand was that the Act could be misused.

The LDF government had directed the DGP to review all UAPA cases registered by the State police.

As regards the charge on the provision of Cabinet decisions under the Right to Information Act, the CPI(M) leader said it was for the High Court to ensure more clarity on the Act’s provision of exemption from disclosure of information.

The CPI(M) leader said though the Subcollector had been stopped by local party workers at Munnar, it was the intervention of the party's district leadership that led to the eviction of an encroachment, he said.

The Subcollector could have gone there after informing the police, Mr. Kodiyeri said.
