Agitation against high speed rail corridor

May 26, 2013 09:26 am | Updated 09:26 am IST - THALASSERY:

An action committee formed at Dharmadam here to protest against the High Speed Rail Corridor will hold an evening dharna and a public meeting at Chirakkuni here on May 27, members of the action committee told a press meet here on Saturday.

The rail route passes through Chala, Kadamboor, Thottada, Kathiroor, Dharmadam and Chokli regions in the district. As many as seven out of the 18 panchayats in the Dharmadam area will have to be acquired for the purpose, thus affecting one-fourth of the total land area in the panchayat. Nearly 400 families in the panchayat alone will face eviction in this case. The total number of families to be evicted for the rail corridor is estimated at 75,000 giving rise to questions such as who will benefit from the project, P.M. Prabhakaran, Dharmadam panchayat president, said.

The committee members said that people from other parts of the district will also be brought together to intensify their agitation.
