A New Delhi-based agency has been tasked with the responsibility of submitting recommendations to tackle the waste management issue in the Kottayam Municipality.
Led by Jose K. Mani, M.P., the municipal authorities have brought in the services of the IL&FS Waste Management and Urban Services Limited to arrive at a permanent solution for the existing situation.
As the initial phase of the project, a three-member team of the agency held talks with Mr. Mani and Kottayam Municipal Chairman Sunny Kalloor here on Monday.
Following a detailed study, a report will be submitted by the agency by February 20.
An integrated scheme that incorporates the various recommendations regarding waste collection, removal and disposal is being prepared by the municipality. The feasibility report will also take into consideration various details like the population within the municipality and the amount of waste generated by households per day.
Mr. Mani also informed the meeting that enquiries would be made to seek Central funds for the waste management scheme.
Following discussions, the team also visited the Vadavathoor dumping yard on the same day.
The agency was instrumental in the waste management programmes in major cities like Delhi, Nagpur and Jalandhar, and the Kozhikode Corporation.
