The government would introduce diversification of products in the coir sector soon, Minister for Revenue and Coir, Adoor Prakash, has said.

The Minister was inaugurating the State-level Onam fair organised by the Foam Mattings India Limited (FMIL) in Pathanamthita on Monday.

Mr. Prakash said the idea was to launch an array of diverse coir products in the market in an effort to energise the traditional coir sector. He said the demand for coir products has gone up in the national market and the eco-friendly natural fibre products would be made available in the market at a reasonable price.

The Minister said the government was committed to ensure job security to the nearly 3.5 lakh workers in the coir sector.

K.Sivadasan Nair, MLA, presided over the function and C.Venugopalan Nair, FMIL chairman, inaugurated the sales at the fair.

A.Sureshkumar, municipal chairman, gave away the Onam message on the occasion. Munjinattu Ramachandran, FMIL managing director; K.Viswambharan, director, and Robin Peter, District Panchayat member, also spoke.

The FMIL has launched 30 Onam fairs in different parts of the State on Monday, expecting a sales turnover worth Rs 2 crore, said Mr Venugopalan.
