VS: no need to lure UDF MLAs

Says LDF is working towards the next Assembly elections

August 07, 2014 02:49 am | Updated 02:49 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has said that there is no compulsion on the Left Democratic Front (LDF) to drag out ‘five or eight’ MLAs from the United Democratic Front (UDF).

Replying to questions at a news conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Achuthanandan said the LDF would be ready to consider it if anyone who wished to bring down the ‘corrupt’ UDF government. As things stood, the LDF had 65 MLAs in the Assembly.

Immediately after the Assembly elections, there was only a difference of two members between the UDF and LDF in the Assembly. Everybody knew how the UDF increased its tally in the House. The LDF leadership was working towards the next Assembly elections.

That being the case, where was the reason for the LDF to bring anyone from the other side, he asked.

The Opposition Leader said he had no knowledge of media reports that CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan had held discussions with Kerala Congress (M) leader and Finance Minister K.M. Mani on making him Chief Minister.

“Investigative journalists among you should probe such matters and bring out the truth,” Mr. Achuthanandan said and added that he was surprised how such reports came about.

‘Demolish resort’

Mr. Achuthanandan called upon the government to take immediate steps to demolish the tourist resort constructed in violation of the coastal zone management norms at Panavally in Alappuzha district and the DLF apartment complex at Chelavannur in Kochi. He accused Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and his Cabinet of failure to carry out the Supreme Court order despite the lapse of one year. He had visited both the sites and found that the constructions were in gross violation of the norms.

The apartment complexes coming up at Pattoor in the capital and at Adimalathura too were being constructed in violation of norms. But the government was observing silence over the issue, he alleged.
