The Secretary of Union Department of Heavy Industry S. Sundareshan has said that “the awareness and necessity for accurate fluid flow measurement is mandatory in the present day scenario of business.”
Inaugurating the global conference and exhibition (flotek.g-2012) “Towards Smarter and Greener Flow Measurement and Control” Oil, Gas, Water… organized by Fluid Control Research Institute, Kanjikode near here on Wednesday the Secretary said that it is very important to have “accurate bulk fluid measure for companies in the petroleum, power, process, space, aeronautical and other sectors.”
“Minor variations in measurements can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for companies involved in the international trade. Typically, the measurements conducted on a petroleum cargo by 10 different officials could result in 10 different figures. A clear understanding of the intricacies of fluid measurement could solve the problem. But it is easier said than done”, the Secretary said.
He said that in this direction the role of FCRI in imparting knowledge and expertise in the field of flow measurement and control has been exemplary. Since its inception in 1989, FCRI has been instrumental in maintaining a national measurement system for fluid flow. The institute has created a system with international traceability and reputation.
FCRI has constantly made efforts to upgrade their system to keep abreast of the requirements from industry, the Secretary said.
The Chairman of Petroleum Natural Gas Regulatory Board S. Krishnan has said that “hydrocarbon sector plays a pivotal role in the economic growth of any country. India being the fifth largest energy consumer in the world, 477 million tonnes of Oil equivalent was consumed in 2010-11. About 45 per cent of this energy needed was being met by Oil and Gas sector and natural gas alone contributed around 10 per cent.”
The Chairman said that “the accuracy of flow measurement of Oil and Gas is a complex and deep subject especially because the size of Oil and Gas industry in India in terms of turnover is around 160 billion U.S dollar. With such high volume of revenue at stake in Oil and Gas transactions, success of commercial delivery lies in accuracy of flow measurement and control.”
In his address Sheikh Ahmed Bin Hashil Al Maskery of Oman has said that “Oman is keen to develop professional skills of nationals and would like to utilize the benefit of research and training facilities of FCRI for our employees. Oman is having good relations with India and many Indian companies have entered into joint ventures in Oman and the bilateral trade is on the increase every year.”
The meeting was addressed by M.B. Rajesh, M.P, Shashank Goel, Chairman, FCRI, S. Saseendran, Director, Dr. Manus Henry of Oxford University, U.K, Dr. George Mattingly of National Institute for Standards and Technology, U.S.A, among others.
