A border village in Kozhikode is making an appeal to the nation to honour P.V. Abdurahman, 64, who sacrificed his life in a bid to save another on April 8.

On the day, Abdurahman, a retired government employee, saw Raman, 62, a tribesman walking along the railway track at Kadalundi at 5.45 a.m. Raman had auditory challenges and did not hear the sound of an approaching train.

Abdurahman ran towards Raman and pushed him off the track only to get hit by the train.

He died on the spot and Raman later.

The heroic sacrifice made by Abdurahman soon became a topic of discussion not only in the village but also in the media.

Writer K.P. Ramanunni and social critic M.N. Karasseri lauded Abdurahman’s selfless act.

The Kadalundi grama panchayat and the local units of different political parties organised functions in honour of Abdurahman.

The Kerala State Service Pensioners Union, of which he was a member, passed a resolution seeking the nation to honour him for the brave deed. “It is not mere bravery. It is selfless dedication. If we do not recognise this, what else do we. Abdurahman should be honoured posthumously,” C. Abdurahman, a retired teacher and witness to the incident, said.

He was at the spot after the Subah (dawn) prayers on the day.“My friend Abdurahman’s act should get due recognition,” he said.
