Society should be vigilant against the attempts to wilfully misinterpret Sree Narayana Guru’s teachings to appropriate him as the representative of a particular caste or religion, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the 84th Sivagiri Pilgrimage at the Sivagiri Madom in Varkala here on Friday.

In a speech replete with extensive references to the Guru’s teachings and writings, Mr. Vijayan said that if the people were not vigilant enough, the Guru would be appropriated and anointed as the Guru of everything that he stood against.

“The Guru taught us that humanism should be our caste and our creed. He told us that whatever be the religion, all that matters is the goodness of the person. When his own words leave no doubts as to his views on caste and religion, there is no need for those acting as his spokespersons to come out with new interpretations. We should not tie this great personality who should be a Guru to all humanity, down to our limited caste or religious boundaries,” Mr. Vijayan said.

Superstitious

With superstitious and regressive practices, once almost eradicated, making a return with increased vigour, Kerala could not be called a ‘progressive State,’ Mr. Vijayan said.
