A male leopard cub that strayed into a tea estate lane at Thovarimala, near Sulthan Bathery, under the Meppadi range of forest of the South Wayanad Forest Division was caught on Saturday noon.

The seven-month-old cub was found in a deserted room of an estate lane around 10.30 a.m.

A team of veterinarians led by forest veterinary surgeon Arun Zachariah caught the cub after applying a tranquilliser shot.

The animal had a serious abdominal injury. Divisional forest officer Abdul Azeez said it could have been injured while trying to escape a trap.

The animal, kept under observation, would be shifted to the Kerala Veterinary and Animals Sciences University at Pookode on Sunday morning, he added.
