The Kannur railway station here is all set to get a facelift as ongoing developmental works including installation of escalator and lift and construction of subway are progressing at a fast pace.

According to Railway authorities here, works for installing the escalator and the lift will be completed by the end of July, while the construction of the subway connecting platforms of the railway station will take a few months more.

The completion of the works will be a major step in enhancing the passenger amenities at the station, they said.

The subway works are estimated at Rs. 1.71 crore, while escalator and lift works are estimated at Rs. 32 lakh and Rs. 35 lakh respectively.

A meeting to review the progress of the works and other railway-related projects and proposals was held here on June 9 in which P.K. Sreemathy, MP, K.M. Shaji, Kannur Corporation Mayor E.P. Latha and senior Railway engineering officials were present.

Ms. Sreemathy said in a press release that the railway officials had promised to arrange dormitory facility for women with 10 beds in the existing station building in two weeks.

The officials had also assured that a 20-bedded dormitory for women would be opened in the new railway building under construction at the station, she added.

The MP also said that the team of Railway engineering wing officials had also visited the railway underpass at Thayatheru, which at present is a bottleneck on the Thayatheru road.

She said that the Railway officials had informed of the Railway’s willingness to widen the underpass if the adequate land was acquired and estimated project cost was deposited.

Residents in the area close to the site of the construction of the railway overbridge at Pappinissery would soon get a relief as steps would be taken in two weeks to ensure temporary arrangement for small vehicles such as two-wheelers and autorickshaws could cross the railway track near the construction spot.

The facility would be arranged by the Railways and the Kerala State Transport Project which is developing the Pappinissery-Pilathara road.
