INA cadet collapses during training, dies

A naval cadet at the Indian Naval Academy (INA) at Ezhimala here died while he was undergoing physical training as part of his course.

The deceased has been identified as Pranay Shivcharan Lanjewar, son of Shivcharan Mansaram Lanjewar, from Bhandara district in Maharashtra.

He died on July 25 evening and the body was taken to the Pariyaram Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. An official pressnote of the INA informing of the demise of the cadet said that the cadet collapsed at the INA Stadium during a physical conditioning training session for newly-joined first term cadets of the INA.

The training was conducted under the direct supervision of instructors in the physical training field, the release informed.

The cadet was immediately administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation by the instructor after he collapsed and while being taken to the Naval Hospital by ambulance. All efforts to revive the cadet by the medical specialist at the hospital failed and he was declared dead, the release said.

Inquiry ordered

It also added that relatives of the cadets were informed. A board of inquiry has been ordered by the Southern Naval Command on the incident, the release noted.

In September 2012, an Indian Coast Guard trainee at the INA had died after he collapsed during a routine training event.

He collapsed at INA Stadium during a physical conditioning training for new cadets.
