Good response to Congress stir call

January 06, 2017 07:41 pm | Updated 07:41 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Congress workers picketed Central and State government offices across the State on Friday in protest against demonetisation and the State government’s handling of the situation.

Inaugurating the picketing before the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regional office here, Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala accused the Union and State governments of competing with each other to heap miseries on the people. The Congress workers turned their ire on the police resulting in a scuffle between the two sides. The police later removed Mr. Chennithala and other Congress workers from the scene.

Inaugurating the picketing at Kozhikode, former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the Centre’s action amounted to a criminal conspiracy against the people who had trusted the Prime Minister’s words, only to be fooled. In Thrissur, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president V.M. Sudheeran termed the demonetisation decision the biggest scam the world had seen. All India Congress Committee secretary Deepak Babria inaugurated the picketing in Kochi, KPCC vice president V.D. Satheesan in Pathanamthitta and K. Muralidharan, MLA, in Kottayam.

The Opposition UDF district leadership meetings would begin on Saturday to chalk out the collective agitation plans of the alliance. Senior UDF leaders, including Mr. Chennithala would attend these meetings, UDF convener P.P. Thankachan said in a statement here on Friday.
