A seven-year-old boy, a tourist from Thanjavur district of the neighbouring Tamil Nadu State, was drowned in the Pampa River after he reportedly slipped and fell into the water during a houseboat cruise late Monday night.

According to the Pulinkunnu police, Mohammed Savid, seven, had arrived with his family from Aavanam in Thanjavur on a sightseeing trip in Alappuzha on Monday and boarded a houseboat last evening. The boy’s

father, Haji Alahuddin, a businessman in Malaysia, and the rest of the family were having supper around 11.30 p.m., when the boy is said to have slipped and fallen into the water.

A rescue effort by the Fire and Rescue personnel did not bear fruit and the body was traced around 2.30 a.m. on Tuesday. The body was been handed over to relatives after postmortem, who later left for their hometown, police said.
