Amended rules will destroy aided education: NSS

Policy of equidistance from parties has paid dividends, says general secretary

January 01, 2017 07:45 pm | Updated 07:46 pm IST - KOTTAYAM:

Nair Service Society (NSS) general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair has said that successive governments in the State has taken a stance that will destroy the aided education sector which has played the pivotal role in taking the State to the forefront of education in the country.

Addressing the Nair Prathinidhi Sammelan organised as part of the 140th Mannam Jayanthi Sammelan at Perunna on Sunday, Mr. Nair said the provisions in the amended Kerala Education Rules (KER) had been a negation of the half-a-century-old covenant between the State government and the aided school managements. The amendment has been brought forward in the name of fighting corruption, but instead of bringing the corrupt to book, the government has taken a blanket view of the situation, he said.

The present provisions would only help to legalise the illegal appointments made by some of the managements, he said, and pointed out that the persons who were illegally appointed were being forcibly imposed on managements like the NSS. “The idea of Teacher Bank is an open breach of the rights of the aided school managements,” he said.

He said that the policy of keeping equal distance from all political parties had paid rich dividends as was evident from the sympathetic attitude of the former UDF government and the present LDF government to the needs of the NSS. The organisation would, however, speak out whenever social justice was in peril. “This should not be construed as a stance against or for any political party,” Mr. Nair said. Just as the NSS did not intervene in the internal affairs of the political parties, it will not allow any political party to intervene in the affairs of the organisation.

“Don’t try to conquer us,” he said without naming any political party and advised such entities to try to earn NSS’s goodwill. “This will pay dividends,” Mr. Nair said. The NSS general secretary exhorted the members of the community to bring back simplicity in celebrations, especially those connected with marriage.

Resolutions

The Sammelan adopted resolutions calling for changes in the amended provisions of KER; implementation of the S.R. Sinhu commission recommendations and preserving the customs and traditions of the Sabarimala Sree Ayyappa temple which restricts women of the age group 10 to 50 years from entering the Sannidhanam.

NSS president P.N. Narendranathan Nair chaired the meeting. V.P. Haridas, Karayogam registrar, spoke.
