April 08, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

The district will have 90 women polling stations in the Assembly elections this time.

Each constituency will have 10 women polling stations, according to district electoral officer R. Girija. Stations with a majority of women voters are to be converted into women polling stations. All the officials in charge of the women polling stations, including the police on duty, will be women. Men can also cast their votes at the women polling stations.

Strict action would be taken against officials who refuse to hand over department vehicles for election duty, she said on Thursday. Refusal to allocate vehicles for electoral purposes would be deemed as violation of clauses of the Representation of the People Act, which could invite penalty and imprisonment. The district electoral officer is empowered to take over the vehicles with the help of police.

The anti-defacement squad of the district electoral wing has already removed 15,400 posters affixed in violation of model code of conduct.
