The government has created 652 new posts in the Health Department and medical education wing, making the total number of posts created in the health sector after the LDF government took over to 3,938, Health Minister K.K. Shylaja has said.

This was the first time that such a large number of posts were being created in such a short period, she said in a statement here on Wednesday.

The new posts — 610 in the Health Department — were part of the human resources required for the implementation of Aardram Mission.

Shortage of human resources had been a major reason for the woeful level of services provided in government hospitals. One of the major objectives of Aardram Mission was to make government hospitals more hospitable and patient-friendly.

Of the 610 new posts, 266 posts had been created in specialty and super-specialty cadres in various departments, while 344 posts were in 14 categories, including those of pharmacists and technical staff. This included the 68 posts of dialysis technicians being created in 44 taluk hospitals, where the government intended to start dialysis units.

Of the 42 new posts in the medical education wing, 14 posts had been created in Thrissur Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), where a new cardio vascular thoracic (CVT) surgery department was being created and another 14 posts for starting a cath lab.

Thrissur MCH is the only one in the State where these facilities were not available, Ms. Shylaja said.
