The district administration has decided to intensify the drive to contain dengue fever after 54 confirmed cases were reported in the district.
At a district-level meeting of people’s representatives, it was mentioned that 148 suspected cases of dengue too were reported. Most of the patients with fever symptoms were from Ajanur, Kanhangad, Balal, Chengala, Chemnad, Kodom-Belur, Madikkai, and Pullur-Periye panchayats, with Kanhangad topping the list. The Health personnel were assessing the ground-level situation, official sources here said on Friday.
Kanhangad municipality has been instructed not to let waste water generated the fish and meat market in town accumulate.
‘Dry day’
As part of the cleanliness campaign, it had been decided to observe ‘dry days’ on November 11, 18, and 25 in the vulnerable localities, they said.
‘Dry days’ are aimed at keeping the premises clean and at clearing stagnant water, to prevent breeding of Aedes mosquitoes that spread the virus. Health workers and voluntary organisations would take part in the campaign.
Beena, a Health Department personnel who was on a door-to-door visit to the households in Mavungal near Kanhangad recently, said the indifferent attitude of the public was responsible for the spread of the disease.
“If people spare some time to remove waters accumulated in plastic containers, the breeding of mosquitoes can be arrested to a larg extent,” she said.
The meeting was attended by P. B. Abdul Razak, MLA; District Collector P. S. Mohammed Sagir; ADM H. Dineshan; district medical officer P. Gopinathan and other senior officials from the district.
