Public Works Minister V. K. Ebrahim Kunju said here on Saturday that the repair of battered roads in the State would be completed well before the targeted date of November 30.
The works were progressing as per schedule and 50 per cent of works had already been completed. Progress was being reviewed at six levels and he was getting daily reports on the progress. Decisions taken at a recent meeting held in Kochi on the repair works had been carried out.
The Minister said in an official release that a special team had been formed at the Secretariat to point out deficiencies in repair works and take remedial action. Besides, the complaints redress cell would be strengthened.
Post-repair
Mr. Ebrahim Kunju observed that the situation, however, was that of the roads getting damaged within two months of repair. “A solution will have to be found.”
Admitting that the roads were in serious disrepair, the Minister said that damage to the roads was worse this year as the pre monsoon repairs had not been carried out by the previous government. The repairs, which were to be undertaken in February, March and April, were not carried out on the ground that the code of conduct for the elections was on. However, the code applied only to new works.
He noted that the rains had started in May and had continued until now. As soon as there was a let-up in the rain, the government had initiated repair. The government was according utmost priority to repair works along with other construction activities.
