Four labourers were killed and nine others injured, some critically, when a borewell-digging truck slipped into a gorge in the hilly Kattankavala village near Chittarikkal, some 40 km from Kanhangad.

The mishap occurred around 6 p.m. as the Tamil Nadu registered truck equipped with heavy borewell-digging equipment fell down into the gorge as the vehicle’s braking system failed while moving along the sloppy road, sources at the Chittarikkal police station said.

The identity of the dead could not be established as yet, police said, adding that the migrant labourers possibly hailed from Tamil Nadu.

The bodies have been sent to the Pariyaram Medical College and their identity could be established only after inquest, they said.

The injured are also receiving treatment at the hospital. Locals assisted by the police led the rescue operation shortly after the mishap. However, fading light hampered the relief operations.
