About three-million people will reach 2,361 polling stations to elect 16 members to the State Assembly from Malappuram district on Monday. The district enjoys the top position not only in the number of voters, but also in seats, candidates, polling stations, polling officials, and security personnel.

As many as 145 candidates, including 11 women, are in the fray in the district. When Tanur has the largest number of candidates (13), Nilambur has the lowest (four). The voting will begin at 7 a.m. and continue till 6 p.m.

Ballots have been set in 2,361 polling stations. When four polling officials will be on duty in a booth, 1,566 booths with more than 1,200 voters will have five officials on duty. As many as 11,002 polling officials, including 2,361 presiding officers, are on election duty. Apart from reserve personnel, 235 sector officers will coordinate the working of booths.

The Election Commission will consider 12 documents for voting at the booth. Apart from the election photo ID card, voters can use passport, driving licence, photo-affixed service ID card, photo-affixed bank or post office passbook, PAN card, NPR smartcard, MGNREGA card, health insurance smartcard, photo-affixed pension documents, Election Commission’s photo voter slip, and official ID card of MP and MLA.

However, cooperative bank passbooks will not be considered.

Security measures

A large force of security personnel consisting of State police officers and nine companies of Central security force has been deployed in the district. There will be six observers of the Central Election Commission and one law and order observer in the district.

There will be 131 sub-observers to help the Central observers. There are 40 ideal booths in the district with better facilities. When 121 booths have been identified as critical, 73 have been identified as sensitive. Voting will be webcast in all critical booths. Voting in the sensitive booths will be videographed.
