Two people died in separate road accidents in the district on Saturday. The accidents occurred at Thana here under the Kannur town police station limits and Vadakkumbad under the Thalassery police station limits.

P.K. Shaheer, 29, driver of a mini lorry laden with sand, died when the vehicle collided with a container truck coming from the opposite side on the National Highway at Thana around 8.30 a.m. on Saturday.

Local people and Fire and Rescue Services personnel took out Shaheer after breaking open the driver’s cabin of the mini lorry.

The container truck was on its way to the Mangalore side, the police said. Though he was immediately rushed to hospital, he could not be saved.

The accident at Vadakkumbad claimed the life of Thahas, 24, of nearby Mailullimotta. He was fatally injured when the motorcycle he was riding was knocked off by a bus from the opposite side at 11 a.m. He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
