1,974 rape cases in State last year

The number of rape cases registered by the police across the State was 1,974 last year. Of the victims, 711 were minors.

District-wise break-up for minors was not provided in the crime statistics released by the State police.

The most number of rape cases was registered in Thiruvananthapuram district — 171. The lowest was in Alappuzha district, 48. In Thrissur, Kollam, Ernakulam, Malappuram, and Wayanad districts the number of rape cases registered last year was above 100.

In molestation cases too, Thiruvananthapuram district posted the highest number, 812. Thirty-nine molestation cases were registered by the Railway police.

There were seven dowry death cases, the break-up being two in Kozhikode and one each in Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Palakkad, and Kannur.

Kidnap cases

As many as 177 women were kidnapped in the State last year. A total of 12,383 cases were registered in the State as crimes against women last year.

Thirty-six children were murdered in the State last year, including one infant. Twelve cases were registered under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
