Corporation officials confiscate tonnes of banned plastic carrybags from the godown of Ramachandran Textiles at Pazhavangadi in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday.

After a lull, the City Corporation on Saturday intensified its drive against banned plastic carrybags and non-woven polypropylene bags in the capital seizing 12 tonnes of plastic carrybags from the East Fort locality.

This is the biggest seizure of plastic carrybags by the City Corporation ever since the ban on these carrybags came into effect on March 1. The plastic carrybags were seized from over 20 shops, including Ramachandran Textiles in Pazhavangadi.

A 32-member team of the Health wing led by Health Supervisors, P. Ajayakumar and P. Dharmapalan and comprising 12 Health Inspectors, 20 Junior Health Inspectors and Corporation employees were involved in the raids.

The Corporation swung into action after it was found that major textile shops and departmental stores were continuing to use the banned plastic carrybags and non-woven polypropylene bags even after giving adequate time to avoid them and to introduce alternative packing materials.

Mayor V. K. Prasanth said the City Corporation will not allow the move by a section of traders to sabotage the ban being enforced on plastic carrybags in the capital.

The raids to confiscate the banned carrybags will be intensified and the squads had been strengthened. The Corporation will take stern steps including cancellation of the licence of those stocking and distributing the banned carrybags, he said.
