June 27, 2014 02:46 pm | Updated 02:46 pm IST - KANNUR:

Clashes between activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) at Kadamberi, near Taliparamba, here late Wednesday night left 12 activists of the rival parties injured and a CPI(M)-controlled library vandalised.

Trouble began when a group of IUML activists watching World Cup football matches at a vacant house at Kadamberi late in the night came under attack by alleged CPI(M) workers.

IUML leaders alleged the attack was carried out by a group of nearly 30 CPI(M) activists. Nine IUML activists sustained stab injuries, they said.

The library controlled by the CPI(M) was vandalised, allegedly by IUML workers in retaliation for the attack on them. Windowpanes were smashed and furniture damaged. An anganwadi functioning in the building also sustained damage. Local CPI(M) leaders said three party workers sustained stab injuries in the attack.

The police deployed personnel in the area in view of the tense situation. The area had witnessed CPI(M)-IUML clashes in the past.
