The people of Cherumukku, near Tirurangadi, celebrated the heavy rain in a unique way on Sunday. Under the banner of the Youth Federation, Cherumukku, a district-level swimming competition was conducted in the rain-filled paddy fields.
Hundreds of people gathered on the banks of the fields as 30-odd youngsters from across the district displayed their swimming skills. The spectators encouraged the swimmers with great enthusiasm.
K.V. Safwan, president of the Youth Federation, said that they had adopted all safety measures as the water was nearly four metres deep. He said the youth had responded positively to the competition, held in 100-metre freestyle.
U.K. Ismail, 30, a taxi driver from Cherumukku, won the first prize. A.K. Mustafa, one of the organisers, said the youth of Cherumukku were so proactive that they came up with something novel every season.
The Youth Federation had earlier conducted State-level tug-of-war and Kolkali contests, a district-level Mappilapattu competition, and a Nadan pattu contest.
