10,000 encroachers to get title deeds

Administrative sanction for Rs.135-crore flyover at Edappally in Kochi

The Cabinet has decided to grant title deeds to those who encroached upon land taken over for power projects and abandoned subsequently in Idukki district. About 10,000 persons in 10 villages in the district will get titles for up to four acres.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the media after a Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday that the assignment rules would be amended using the special powers of the government to exempt area restrictions in assignment of government land.

Guidelines will be issued for making the assignments after the details of the land are received from the Collector.

3 more PSC members

The Chief Minister said three more members would be appointed to the Public Service Commission (PSC), taking the number of members of the PSC up from 18 to 21.

The Chief Minister said the Cabinet had given administrative sanction for the first stage of the monorail project in Thiruvananthapuram, costing about Rs.3,500 crore. The 22.2-km line will connect Karamana to Technocity, near Kazhakuttam.

The Cabinet had also given administrative sanction for the Rs.135-crore flyover at Edappally in Kochi, to be built by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. The State will contribute Rs.95 crore for the flyover and the balance will be met from the project funding for the Kochi Metro Rail.

Trawling ban

A ban on trawling in the coastal seas of the State will be enforced from June 15 to July 15 for conservation of fish resources.

Landowners will be paid half the market price as compensation for giving right of laying the gas pipeline under the proposed project of GAIL.

Mr. Chandy said the assistance given by NoRKA (Non-Resident Keralites Affairs) in case of death of Keralites abroad would be enhanced from Rs.20,000 to Rs.1 lakh. The medical assistance for treatment of cancer and other diseases will be increased from Rs.20,000 to Rs.50,000. The income limit for eligibility has also been enhanced.

He said that Rs.2.5 crore sought by the Alappuzha Collector for protection of the coast from sea erosion had been granted.

Protective works for Rs.70 lakh have already been arranged following report of losses from sea erosion in the district.
