Life in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley continued to remain out of gear as curfew was extended to other towns on Thursday. Even as the Army staged flag marches, protests against killings of civilians continued in some parts, but by and large the situation remained calm, tinged with unease.
Srinagar wore a deserted look for the third day as strict curfew restrictions were in place with CRPF and police manning the streets. Even ambulances and essential services were not allowed and the movement of journalists was banned; consequently, no newspaper hit the stands. On Wednesday, the city reverberated with nocturnal protests with people taking to the streets in some areas and using mosque loudspeakers to chant pro-freedom slogans. Natipora, Batmaloo and Aloochi Bagh saw sloganeering throughout the night. At this, civil authorities asked the Army to stage a few more flag marches in Srinagar.
