The execution of Ajmal Kasab, which follows the hanging of Dhananjoy Chatterjee in 2004, is believed to be the second-quickest trial-to-execution case in the country.
While it took three years to decide on the fate of Ramchandra alias Raoji, a resident of Banswara in Rajasthan who was awarded the death sentence for the murder of his family, Kasab was hanged just a few days short of the fourth anniversary of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
As per official data provided by RTI activist Subhash Agrawal, Raoji was executed on May 4, 1996, three years after killing five persons, including his pregnant wife and three children.
In 1996, the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence awarded to him by a sessions court in 1994. In March 1996, President Shankar Dayal Sharma rejected his mercy plea within six days of the petition being put before him. He was hanged on May 4, 1996.
Kasab was hanged almost four years after he, along with nine other terrorists, attacked various locations in Mumbai on November 26, 2008.
Significantly, President Pranab Mukherjee took an out-of-turn decision in rejecting Kasab’s plea as at least 14 other petitions, including that of the Parliament attack case convict Afzal Guru, were pending with the President as of October this year.
Chatterjee was convicted for the murder of 14-year-old Hetal Parekh on March 5, 1990 at her apartment in Bhowanipur, West Bengal.
Earlier, serial killer Auto Shankar was executed in Salem, Tamil Nadu, in 1995.
Sources in the government said the President had returned seven mercy petitions, including that of Afzal Guru, for the consideration of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

However, it has been termed a normal procedure for President to refer all pending mercy petitions for the consideration of a new Home Minister.
Notably, the Home Ministry, as well as the Delhi government, had recommended that Afzal Guru’s mercy petition, filed by his wife, be rejected by the President.

Giving Kasab death by hanging was the most humane of all options
available. I wonder what the amnesty international said when these
monsters went out shooting in my city. They deserve no amnesty. Their
crimes were too horrific to afford a milder punishment. People who
advocate that these people not be executed simply don't understand how
this situation is different from that of the others (where I am okay
with abolishing capital punishment).
These terrorists cannot be reformed after years and years of being
brainwashed in the doctrine of hatred.
There being scope to reform Kasab is all tall talk. The hanging will act
as adeterrent to other such persons. Why Amnesty International was not
so voiceferous in denouncing the hanging of Saddam. That trial was
finished by US in the matter of days. Terrorism has to be fought and
such hangings are one of the ways. A sense of fear needs to be infused in
the minds of potential killers.
People (Children, women, old aged indian nationals) killed by Kasab were not HUMANS??

HR activists don't seem to know where to put their noses in. They don't seem to condemn the acts of terrorism where people who are brainwashed go around killing innocent people, including children. I strongly contest Mr Selvaraj Murugaiyan's opinion that "there was scope to reform the convict through rigorous imprisonment". I vaguely remember Mahatma Gandhi's opinion that dogs that have become mad due to rabies have to be killed and cannot be saved or reformed.
Freedom of speech is the most abused and misused right in India. These so called Human Rights activists are just lime-light seekers and nothing more.
Women get raped and murdered, people in some slums use water from the same tank for consumption and other purposes, untouchability is still prevalant in many parts of India, dowry system, female foeticide and there are many such gross violations of a human being's right to live a free, healthy and fair life. Our HR activists are not bothered about such things because fighting for these causes does not give them the lime-light. Instead they wait for an execution of a terrorist or a rapist to raise the voice. For a man who shot at unarmed innocent people killing and injuring them death penalty is completely justified and absolutely correct. My request to these activists, please go out into the society and try to fight for solving real problems instead of making such useless statements.
If home ministry recommend rejection of mercy petition to president on Oct16 and President reject the petition on Nov5, how come R.R.Patil saying execution fixed on Sep 11 itself? Is this a typo or Operation X well planned from Sep 11 while the mercy plea is still under president review?

What do the writer means by saying that India is going a step backward?? Boss, it is all about justice. 166 people have been died did we argue so much about their death. What happened to human rights that time? Even when you hurt an animal you get a punishment under law. Then what is the punishment for killing 166 people. Why is the word "Gunman" mentioned in this story and many times in other news channels by the Indian media? This guy was a killing machine who butchered innocents on some spurious cause. I can understand Western media for using the terms "Gunman" (when victims are from non-white, non-Western background) and "Terrorist" (when victims are from Western background), but the Indian media using this word "Gunman" completely baffles me.
Kasab was guilty, of which there is no doubt. But guilt does not
equate to punishment by death. We should be civilized and recognize
that human beings do not have the moral right to visit death upon
other human beings. We should recognize that neither does the state
have the right to do so.
This is a moral stand and it has nothing to do with the enormity of
Kasab's crime, which we all recognize to be enormous. Punishment by
death does not make us better human beings than Kasab. It does not
make us more moral. It does not bring the dead back to life. It does

All are equal in the eyes of the law but some are more equal than others.
The death penalty is sad, but we do live in a terrible world. The Oklahama bomber, Timothy Mcveigh, was also executed in the U.S. on terrorism charges, so its kind of unfair for Amnesty International to say that India is backward in that regard.
In the case of the U.S. bomber too, the trial and execution were very fast, unlike normal death penalty cases there, which take more than 20 years from verdict to the actual execution.
Killing a terrorist is sad, but killing of innocent men, women and children is even sadder.

fairness of the words used in all reports published on his death
sentence, which was way beyond (in my opinion) than any other Indian
and Western media.
The punishment came as a justice and solace to the pain suffered by
all Indians during the black hours of 26/11 and later. Even though the
news gave a sense of relief across the nation, we must not forget that
there may be many Kasab(s) and Guru(s) getting ready to wage war
against India. They may be hidden in our own soil or getting ready in
our neighboring country, whose future is full of darkness. It is
time for our government, security and intelligence agencies to
re-examine their flaws and fill any loophole in our maritime security,
so that we can prevent completely or act rapidly during such terror

Kasab's hanging should act as a warning to other terrorists. But what
about the main culprits who motivated him to commit the brutal murders?
I do not support the death penalty...but for certain heinous acts it might be justified. I don't know! There is nothing glorious about the hanging of Kasab. He was only the
weapon which has been destroyed, but the real brains and Culprits who
planned this are still at large and may never be caught. As long as
there are plenty of poor kids who suffer in poverty who do not have
future , this will only repeat as there are certain evil powers who
will brainwash them and make them do similar dastardly acts by paying
them money. Looks like these attacks were very carefully planned
overseas maybe with some local help for some political/geopolitical

I'm no conspiracy theorist, however, I don't believe that kasab has not only been hanged but
buried as well and that even within the jail premises within an hour. The video of the same, if
there is any as claimed by some news channels, should be made public like in the case of
saddam hussain, and till then I would not believe it.

A little consolation at a whopping cost of 29.5 crore. The biggies are
still roaming free and India is yet not able to get them. How much has

The government has finally given the victims of the terror attacks some taste of justice. But citizens of India must remember that this does not call for festivities. 1.Is the hanging related to the ire the govt is facing over Coalgate,
2G, a vote looming in Parliament and the start of the campaign for 2014?
2.Why was close to 30 crores spent on Kasab? Has an average Indian ever
seen Rs 30 crores in his entire life? Was he worth more than the average
Indian?

I am sad to read the hawkish comments appearing in this page expressing
happiness over Ajmal's hanging. I do share the sorrow of the victims of
Mumbai 26/11. But, remember Ajmal was actually kid when he committed
the crime. What would have been our reaction if he were a kin of ours?

country. It is high time that we abolished capital punishment.

Though it was a deep deep pain that one received the news regarding the hanging of Kasab, considering the dare-devil attack on the financial capital of the Country, in which many innocent lives were lost, the capital punishment meted out on Kasab which indeed was in line with the verdict of the Apex Court was but a way to bring the 26/11/2008 case to its logical conclusion. Immediately after the Supreme Court came out with its verdict that Kasab be hanged, there were debates and discussions for and against the verdict. It was also rumoured as to what will happen to the case when it goes for the Presidential pardon. Parliament due in 24 hours and a lame duck Government dysfunctional for

Last week he was supposed to be suffering from dengue fever and now this
secrecy in hanging.Too many questions and no answer.

Kasab was a weapon, used by terrorists and then by politicians. Victims are we people!
It is a bold step for a country like India, which is called a soft
power state. But, it again provides air to the debate of Death
penalty, as the countries having death penalty hasn't witnessed any
decline in terrorist activities. As death kills you once but rigorous
imprisonment provides you an opportunity to introspect every moment
you spent in jail. In the land of non-violence and peace, death
penalty is hugely contested and debated topic. But it is also said
that citizens (mostly general public) in a developing country like
India are not mature enough to understand the thin lines between
putting a culprit like a deadly terrorist into the frame of moral
behavior, this general public clearly understands in terms of
punishment. So this step of hanging of kasab should be a step towards
realizing that particular philosophy of non-violence and peace in the
land of Gandhi. But definitely, this bold step will re-frame India's
image as a powerful nation, who will not succumb to terrorism.
One important question is whether the due process of law was followed
in this case or not?
The secrecy that surrounded the whole execution only adds to the suspicion and though the government's argument that it was needed on
account of this case being so sensitive holds considerable merit yet
it definitely goes against the spirit of justice.
Beside timing of the execution also suggests that it could have been
fixed to help the government and if this was the case , it definitely
asks for condemnation for politics must be kept away from such

Yes, Justice came after 4 years for a foreigner. As a comman Indian seeking similar punishments for anti-nationals [ corrupt breucrats / politicians / business man etc]
Kasab Hanged....... At last a tribute from Indian Government to 166
people who died in 26/11.
should we rejoice his death??? will his death give solace to the
departed souls of the carnage??? what a mixed bag of emotions... should
we support the pain of our Indians??? or should we look at the
humanity???

The capital punishment execution will infuse confidence into the people
of India(in & abroad) before law.
This will instill great faith in our Judiciary System, though it is slow but we cannot say it is not sure,i pay my kind tribute to all those who lost their precious life in 26/11 mindless act of terror

Rare courage displayed by an ordinary constable armed with just a
lathi of the Maharashtra Police resulted in the arrest of Ajmal Kasab,
one of the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai massacre. Revelations in a
Pakistani television channel gave us the information that he is a
Pakistani national. Immediately BJP started saying that Pakistan
declared war on India and has been demanding his hanging. Facebook was
full of comments and notes on his fate. Going by the discussion in
facebook a visitor from Mars can be forgiven if he thinks that once
Kasab is hanged India will become a land of milk and honey. Reaction
of BJP that the hanging would send the right message across the border
is really amusing. In 1998 they thought that they would be sending the
right message by exercising the nuclear option. Advani went to the
extent of inviting them for a war at a place of their choice. They
retaliated by exercising their own option which robbed us of our
conventional superiority forever and the region earned the sobriquet
of a most dangerous place. Actually kasab is a small fry motivated by
religious hatred. His young age and, lack of education, grinding
poverty and his immaturity was exploited by his handlers who are
roaming free. We have to be worried about that. Terrorism is the
result of a particular mindset which is no different from the one
paying tributes to a person known to nurse all kinds of biases and
hatred.
Indeed a TRUE tribute to the people of INDIA who laid their life on that fatefull day
Punishment as a deterrent alone keep peace in society.Human values
demand that law-abiding citizens should be protected while law-breakers
are punished.
Capital punishment should be awarded to those who indulge in dastardly
acts of violence.The perpetrators of violence pay no heed to values in
committing such acts.Invoking values to defend their action will erode
values.
True homage to the victims is not paid until the chief of LeT Hafiz Saeed is brought down, while he now roams as a free man in pakistan.
It is good to hear that Kasab was hanged atleast now. This verdict clearly shows India will not tolerate the barbaric acts against it. Kudos for the Judgenment panel of Supreme court, who has give this verdict.

He should be hanged long time back that would have saved tax payer's
money. He and his group was found killing 166 people at least in those
three days and they were captured on camera, what does it took so many
days to upholding the punishment.
We should ask these questions to our government.
Even if one's reason says that the enormity of the crime ensured that the capital punishment had to be meted out, one's heart feels, on hearing the mind-numbing news of a man having been hanged, and in that fragile moment wishes that all these had not come to pass and that everyone would live in peace and happiness.
The thorough interrogation and the fair "rule of the land" brought upon "Pakistani" terrorist (I can't reiterate enough) by India is amongst the finest shows of justice delivered no matter how slow the system delivers it or monstrous the atrocity.
It's for the US and the West to learn from India that Guantanamo Bay has brought nothing but more discontentment amongst the Muslim brothers worldwide and arm the religious extremists in brainwashing more into terrorism.
Italy should keep off (the trial of Italian Navy sailors in India) and US should take a leaf from a "3rd world country".
Have the Government got any info from Kasab after 4 long years spending
crores of Rupees? Should have hanged him a long time back! Shouldn't
have been this much subtle.
Ajmal Kasab got what he deserved, but he should have been hanged much
earlier.

Great news to start a day !!!
When I saw the report my first reaction was of surprise since I didn't expect things move so swiftly. However, this news will indeed bring a sense of relief to the survivors of 26/11 attacks and with them to everyone across the country. Finally justice has been done. That apart, we all should remember that hanging Kasab will not automatically make this country safer. We must revamp our security infrastructure along the borders through which terrorists like Kasab sneaked in. Instead of feeling complacent about getting rid of the lone surviving terrorist of Mumbai attack, the government must focus on its lapses that resulted in the massacre and ensure that they do not recur.
Justice finally. Every Indian was waiting for this moment.
I hope the hanging is not going to be touted as an achievement in the coming elections.
Finally some justice for all Indians whose lives were cut short by this hate filled terrorist and
also some kind of a closure to their near and dear ones.
We salute our policemen and armed forces who sacrificed their lives to capture Kasab.
Now the souls of those whose lives had been cruelly taken away about four years back, will
rest in peace. India should stand united to face any dity game probably Kasab's
sympathisers within and from outside, might try to play. GOI should pursue the matter
vigorously to bring Kasab's handlers too to similar justice ! Congrats to President and the
union Home Ministry for their decisive action, unlike their predecessors!
I hope the kith and kin of victims of 26/11 get closure.

Hopefully this should bring closure to the people who have lost their loved ones
A welcome step by Indian govt by hanging the miscreant who not only tried
to rejuvenate terror in Mumbai but also left his community, country and
humanity deplored by his inhuman and callous act.

Finally after long last, justice prevails. Hope the Govt. strengthens security to ensure that an attack of this nature never happens again.
