The Zilla Panchayat here has helped in weeding out dual admissions in government primary and high schools of the district, which has led to saving Rs. 30 crore of the government. It also has identified some 265 excess teachers.
Umesh Kolkur, the ZP president who is man behind the efforts, decided to put a curb on illegal practice when he came to know about it.
Speaking to The Hindu , he said that during one of the inspections of the schools, the incident came to light that many students who had taken admission in government schools, were actually studying in private English medium school also.
“A study revealed that the parents got their children illegally admitted in two schools using forged documents in order to get rural quota for their children as studying in government schools for some benefits”, he said.
To remove all such false admissions, a campaign was launched in August last year by involving over 700 officials of Education Department.
Mr. Kolkur said that the duel admission also enabled to identify some 265 teachers who are excess to the number of students prescribed for each school.
S.S. Biradar, the Deputy Director of Public Instruction Department said that the duel admission was also giving an inflated figure of number of school drop outs in the district.
“These 32,000 students are already studying in private schools, but since they do not attend classes in government schools, thus we used to include them in the list of drop outs”, Mr. Biradar said.
According to him, if similar drive is launched in all the districts of the State, then the government could save at least a huge; Rs. 500 crore every year.
