The drinking water crisis has been a serious problem in rural areas of Mandya district during every summer.

The Mandya Zilla Panchayat has directed the officials to prepare area-specific action plans to tackle the drinking water crisis that may arise during summer. The officials have also been instructed to initiate steps to effectively implement the plans and mitigate the problem.

Rohini Sindhuri, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, has urged the officials to closely monitor the water supply situation and initiate measures to resolve them, a release from her office said here on Sunday.

Drinking water crisis had been a common problem during every summer, especially in rural areas because of erratic power supply and lack of comprehensive action plans to meet the drinking water needs.

People had to spend a lot of money on buying water from private agencies during summer. Ms. Sindhuri had asked the zilla panchayat Assistant Executive Engineer (drinking water subdivision), panchayat development officers and other officials to be prepared to supply drinking water through tankers to rural areas. A sum of Rs. 70.85 crore had been released to the district for rural water supply schemes to be taken up during 2014-15.

Village water sanitation committees (VWSCs) had been directed to clean the drains in villages. The Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) had been asked to provide adequate electricity to drinking water schemes, the release said. The zilla panchayat had taken up schemes for providing drinking water to 138 villages in the district under multi-village drinking water supply schemes (MVDWSS), release said.
