A zebra at the Mysore Zoo gave birth to a foal on Thursday and the authorities claimed it was the first birth of a zebra foal in the zoo’s history.

The foal was born to “Riddhi” and “Sudhir”. An interaction with seniors zoo authorities and scrutiny of documents confirmed that it was for the first time in the history of Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens – popularly known as the Mysore Zoo – that a zebra has been born.

Deputy Director of the zoo N.T. Vijay Kumar said the foal was doing well.

It was in 1990 that the zoo received a pair of zebras – Edward (male) and Erina (female) - from Hamburg, Germany. However, the pair did not breed and passed away some years ago.

In 2007, the zoo acquired Raja, a male zebra, from Lucknow zoo. The zebra died in 2010.

Subsequently, two pairs of zebras were acquired from Ramat Gan National Park, Israel, in April 2014. They were named Dawn, Dazzle, Riddhi and Sudhir. Dawn and Dazzle died in December 2015 from acute colic.
