The Udupi-Chikkamagaluru committee of the Indian Youth Congress will begin a series of protests against the new land acquisition ordinance.
Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Sunil D. Bangera, vice-president of the committee, said that the ordinance, promulgated by the Union government, would affect farmers and farm workers. “In fact, it is a black legislation for the farmers,” he said.
While the ordinance would provide money to real estate dealers, it would fail to protect the interests of farm workers and lease holders, he claimed.
“What is the need to issue ordinances for all important issues? Why is it hesitating to discuss this issue in Parliament?” he questioned.
He said that the United Progressive Alliance had agreed to pass a land acquisition legislation, which had provisions to protect the interests of the farmers. But the amendments to the legislation were not just an injustice to the farmers, but a sell-out to land grabbers, he added.
The prices of fertilizers had shot through the roof after the NDA came to power, he said.
To protest against these anti-farmer measures, the Youth Congress would submit a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner on Wednesday andwould stage a dharna and submit another memorandum to the Tahsildar’s office on Thursday.
The Youth Congress would also stage a dharna in front of the house of the BJP MP here on January 28 and 29, he said.
